Report of the Rector to the Superintendent of Public Instruction, 1891 October 1.

A draft report of the Rector of the University of Virginia, W.C.N. Randolph, to John E. Massey, Superintendant of Public Instruction, on the "present state and future outlook" of the University of Virginia. The draft report contains tables on home states of students, courses taken, church affiliation, and degrees conferred, followed by an explanatory narrative on church membership; new lines of work; recent benefactions (including $100,000 from Daniel Fayerweather); modifications in the courses for academic degrees; organization of the courses in medicine; new degree in [mechanical] engineering; improvements on grounds and buildings; new appointments (including William H. Echols, James C. Southall, and William A. Lambeth); needs of the University (including a gymnasium, more liberal provision for the library, scholarships and fellowships, adjunct professorshiops, engineering equipment); and financial statement.

Fayerweather was born on March 12, 1822 in Stepney, Connecticut. His father (a shoemaker) died when he was still very young, leaving his family with insufficient means for support.
